Indigenous populations around the world have long acknowledged the drum’s power as a tool for wellness. Thanks to the influence of European colonialism and Western culture this idea has been nearly eradicated. The many walls our society builds in an attempt to distinguish between work and play, artists and artisans, creativity and analysis, discourage many from crossing over and discovering what music and drumming in particular has to offer.
Our bodies know the difference; they are perfect timekeepers. They understand and respond directly to rhythm, relying on the regularity of pulse and vibration to maintain health. Strengthening the connection to rhythm and sound increases awareness in general, and especially of our various physical and emotional states. Steady drumming in particular increases alpha wave activity in the brain, which induces a state of relaxation and calm.
The raw physical nature of drumming, provides its own direct incentives. Posture and core muscles, fingers, hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, neck, feet, ankles, legs and hips all working in synchronous harmony is a beautiful thing and a wonderful work out.
